Best Hawaiian Street Food in Nuʻuanu: Valley Grinds & Catering

Few valleys carry as much Hawaiian history as Nuʻuanu. Kamehameha I won Oʻahu in the 1795 battle fought at its head, Queen Emma kept her summer retreat here, and the Hawaiian royal families rest along Nuʻuanu Avenue. Today the valley is cool, green and residential, the main road over the Koʻolau via the Pali. Danjah Dog brings the flavors of local gatherings to the people who live here.

    Where the truck is

The truck doesn’t park in Nuʻuanu Valley. It serves from the Lowes Home Improvement lot at 411 Pacific Street in Iwilei, down toward the harbor, Monday to Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Grab food there before you head up the valley, or have us cater at your place.

    Trail food and picnic packs

Planning a morning on the Judd Trail? A brunch sando ($8, served all day) is easy to eat before you go. For a picnic, bentos and Hammah Burgahs travel better than anything drippy – just ask for Danjah Sauce on the side. Please pack out everything you bring in.

    Historic Nuʻuanu & Its Neighbors

Nuʻuanu Valley climbs from the edge of Chinatown up to the Nuʻuanu Pali, the gap in the Koʻolau that links Honolulu with Kailua and Kāneʻohe. Along the way it passes some of Oʻahu’s most important historic sites.

    • Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside

The lookout at the top of the valley, about 1,200 feet up, where the trade winds are strong enough to lean on and the windward coast spreads out below.

    • Queen Emma Summer Palace (Hānaiakamalama)

The cool-weather retreat of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, now a museum of royal belongings.

    • Mauna ʻAla, the Royal Mausoleum

The resting place of the Kamehameha and Kalākaua dynasties on Nuʻuanu Avenue, one of the few places the Hawaiʻi flag flies alone.

    • Oʻahu Cemetery

Founded in 1844 across the avenue from Mauna ʻAla, it was Honolulu’s first public cemetery.

    • Judd Trail & Jackass Ginger Pool
