Kakaʻako used to be salt ponds and warehouses. Today the old industrial blocks are covered in murals, the warehouses hold studios and shops, and new towers rise over Kewalo Basin. It’s a neighborhood of artists, surfers, young families and condo dwellers who like their food bold – which is exactly how Danjah Dog cooks: loaded Danjah Dogs, Hammah Burgahs and Cazi’s lau lau bentos with as much Danjah Sauce as you can handle.

Kakaʻako favorites

Kakaʻako’s Gathering Places
Kakaʻako stretches from the edge of downtown to Ala Moana, between the harbor and Kapiʻolani Boulevard. Kakaʻako Waterfront Park anchors the shoreline, and the blocks around Auahi Street are where most of the art, shopping and new housing has landed.
SALT at Our Kakaʻako
A shopping and dining block between Coral and Keawe streets, named for the salt ponds that once covered the area.
POW! WOW! murals
Walls across the neighborhood painted during the yearly POW! WOW! Hawaiʻi festival, turning Kakaʻako into an open-air gallery.
Kewalo Basin
The small harbor that gives the Kewalos surf break its name, with charter boats and harbor-front walking paths.
Hawaiʻi Children’s Discovery Center
A hands-on children’s museum just mauka of the waterfront park – a big draw for school groups and families.
Ward Village
The redeveloped area around Auahi and Kamakeʻe streets, with shops, a movie theater and new residential towers.
