Mākaha helped put modern surfing on the map: the Mākaha International Surfing Championships began here in 1952, and lifeguard and surfing legend Richard “Buffalo” Keaulana is still honored by the Big Board Classic. It’s the last leeward town heading north, under the shoulder of Kaʻala. Danjah Dog brings street food built for that ocean-first life – Danjah Dogs, Hammah Burgahs and Cazi’s lau lau.

Where Danjah Dog really is
The truck isn’t stationed in Mākaha. Find it at the Lowes Home Improvement parking lot, 411 Pacific Street in Iwilei, Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. On the Mākaha side, we come out for booked events.
What a long beach day calls for
Hours in the water burn through a plate lunch fast. Da Hawaiian Hurricane Hammah ($21), Da Big Hot Podagee ($15) or Cazi’s mini lau lau and kalua pig bento hold people over, and adding a $3 combo covers the drink and chips. Da Shaun Burger keeps vegetarian surfers fed too.
